Padma Cecilia Meagher was born at 1:47 am, on Wednesday, March 26, 2008. She arrived into the world a healthy little girl, 6lbs. 13 ozs. , 2 hours after her mother and father arrived at the Squamish hospital.
Padma, both in Tibetan and Indian cultures, means "lotus flower". The Lotus is a metaphor for spiritual enlightenment, because it germinates in the mud at the bottom of a pond, yet perseveres, growing toward the (sun)light to finally mature as a most beautiful, graceful blossom upon the water. In Tibetan and Indian iconography, dieties like Buddha or Vishnu are often sitting on a lotus flower or holding a perfect bloom. Indeed, these gods are often depicted sitting in a "full lotus posture" (Padmasana), a yogic pose very commonly used in meditation. The mantra "Om Mani Padma Hum" is a ubiquitous Buddhist prayer, which they believe when said out loud or silently to oneself, invokes the blessings of Chenrezig, the Buddha of Compassion.
